The Underworld was a place that mortals went to after they died. The ruler of the Underworld was Hades also know as Pluto, he was considered the King of the Dead. Hades was a greedy god who is greatly concerned with increasing his subjects. Those who had offended the Gods might anticipate suffering, but a persons goodness was rewarded with an afterlife of happiness. The Underworld is hidden in the earth. The Erinnyes were always welcome guests in the Underworld. For most people, life in the underworld is not particularly unpleasent. It is rather like a miserable dream, full of shadows, without sunlight or hope. A place where the dead slowly fade into nothing. the Underworld is surrounded by a series of rivers; The acheron (river of woe), The Cocytus (river of lamentation), The Phlegethon (river of fire), The Styx (river of unbreakable oath by which the gods swear), and The Lethe (river of forgetfulness). The entrance was guarded by Cerberus, the three headed dog with a three headed with a dragon tail. All souls were brought to the world by Hermes and but one the ferry. The souls then were faced to a pannel of judges to find out if they were good or bad.
